“The Pope indicts ‘restorationism.’ I plead guilty” (Philip Lawler). Lawler’s guilt of course is the guilt of the innocent Catholic falsely accused. Accused by Villanova’s attorney for everything Francis [standing in for the prosecution] for indictment of Lawler of reneging on VatII. No need to parody Lawler’s excellent defense.
For sake of fair play, rather than outright declaration of Lawler’s innocence of the outrageous allegations striking at the hearts of so many of the faithful. I will look at the matter from the discerning eye of Francis.
True, His Holiness perceives restoration [a kinder more correct jargon may be resourcemente] as rigid. A stifling of what VatII intended. Francis in a best interpretation wishes to loosen the bindings [literally of Church doctrine] so as to recreate a more friendly user type Church in which all the sick, lame, morally ill are welcome. An embrace of merciful love. The field hospital concept where the wounded are segregated the most severely treated first. Communion as a remedy for the ones most in need, not a reward for the righteous. From this writer’s perspective it’s always the effects. Although, a good act may not necessarily achieve a good effect [due to transient conditions], it must be ordered to a good effect. Here we have a Church already in decline, a recent history of lax doctrinal advocation and practice. Francis’ new paradigmatic mercy absent of a distinct call to repentance has by all indications furthered the decline in faith and practice. Must we withhold judgment lest we be judged. Effects tell us otherwise. Furthermore, Christ said we judge a tree by its fruit.
