Biden says nuns inspire him to run, plans to sue Little Sisters of the Poor

Biden’s use of nuns in a campaign video as an inspirational example of “generosity to others” comes despite his promise to renew legal action against the Little Sisters of the Poor should he win election.

CNA Staff, Aug 13, 2020 / 08:30 am (CNA).- Presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden has released a campaign video in which he credits his Catholic faith, Pope Francis, and the example of nuns for his personal inspiration.

The short video was released August 9 on the Democratic National Convention’s Twitter account. Biden’s use of nuns as an inspirational example of “generosity to others” comes despite his promise to renew legal action against the Little Sisters of the Poor should he win election.

Biden has promised to remove freedom of conscience protections which exempt the sisters from the “contraceptive mandate,” opening them back up to renewed suits by the federal government for failure to provide contraceptives to their employees.

“This is the kind of moral conviction we need in the president of the United States,” says the tweet, which led into the video.

In the video, Biden, a Catholic, narrates how once, after having a brief meeting with Pope Francis at St. Peter’s Basilica, he departed the church and ran into a group of religious sisters.

These sisters, said Biden in a voiceover, “to me, epitomize everything Pope Francis talked about in his homily and what he stands for. About generosity to other people, about reaching out, about making it a point to understand that we are our brother’s keeper,” said Biden.

Biden said the idea that people have an obligation to look out for one another had been imprinted on him during his Catholic upbringing and “being educated by the nuns.”

“That’s what those lovely women I’m talking to symbolize to me,” said Biden.

He quipped he thought it was a “good omen” to see the sisters, and said the encounter was an “exciting time and it gave me a lot of hope.”

Recognizing that people are obligated to help each other is “the only way we’re gonna make the world better and safer,” said Biden.

Biden and the pope met in the Vatican in April 2016, when Biden was presenting at a Vatican conference on regenerative medicine, and in 2013, when the then-vice president led a delegation from the United States to Francis’ papal inauguration.

The images and videos in the ad are from the 2016 trip.

Biden’s use of the nuns’ example of service for campaign purposes sits in contrast to his pledge to force one religious order to violate their consciences and provide birth control, sterilizations, and abortifacient drugs to their employees.

Shortly after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Little Sisters of the Poor in Little Sisters of the Poor v. Pennsylvania on July 8, Biden said he was “disappointed” by the decision and promised to reinstate Obama-era policies requiring the sisters to ensure access to birth control in violation of their religious beliefs.

Following nine years of legal battles, and two trips to the Supreme Court, the court upheld an executive action offering the sisters religious freedom and conscience exemptions to the “contraception mandate” issued by the Department of Health and Human Services following the passage of the Affordable Care Act.

“If I am elected I will restore the Obama-Biden policy that existed before the [Supreme Court’s 2014] Hobby Lobby ruling: providing an exemption for houses of worship and an accommodation for nonprofit organizations with religious missions,” said Biden in July.

“This accommodation will allow women at these organizations to access contraceptive coverage, not through their employer-provided plan, but instead through their insurance company or a third-party administrator.”

The Little Sisters of the Poor would not have qualified as a “nonprofit organization with a religious mission” under the Obama-era accommodations. The order serves and employs people of all or no faiths, in accordance with their vocation to serve the elderly poor.

The Little Sisters of the Poor have repeatedly stated that authorizing a “third-party administrator” to provide birth control to their employees is still a violation of their beliefs and is not an acceptable compromise.

Following the July 8 decision, Biden said that the decision “will make it easier for the Trump-Pence Administration to continue to strip health care from women–attempting to carve out broad exemptions to the Affordable Care Act’s commitment to giving all women free access to recommended contraception.”

When the Affordable Care Act was signed into law in 2010, the legislation did not mandate that insurance plans provide at least one form of female contraception, including sterilization. The “contraception mandate” was announced as an interim final rule on August 1, 2011, and was finalized on January 20, 2012.

If elected president, Biden said that he would “end Donald Trump’s ceaseless attempts to gut every aspect of the Affordable Care Act.”

Biden did, however, support members of the Leadership Council of Women Religious (LCWR) groups after the Vatican ordered an inquiry into their conduct and political advocacy.

During a 2011 meeting with then-Pope Benedict XVI, Biden told the pontiff that he was being “entirely too hard on the American nuns” and that he needed to “lighten up.”

The video is not the first time that Biden, who has promised to enshrine the fullest application of Roe v. Wade in federal law, ensuring unlimited access to abortion in the United States, has used his Catholicism in his campaign.

In February, he released a video displaying black-and-white pictures of himself with various religious figures, including Pope Francis.

“Personally for me, faith, it’s all about hope and purpose and strength, and for me, my religion is just an enormous sense of solace,” he added.

“I go to Mass and I say the rosary. I find it to be incredibly comforting,” he said.

While Biden has repeatedly profiled his Catholicism during this election campaign, his faith has been a source of controversy over his lengthy political career, and he has endorsed policies that are contrary to Church teaching.

Shortly after his election as vice president, the then-bishop of his hometown of Scranton, PA, rebuked Biden for his views on abortion.

“I will not tolerate any politician who claims to be a faithful Catholic who is not genuinely pro-life,” said Bishop Joseph Martino of Scranton in 2008.

“No Catholic politician who supports the culture of death should approach Holy Communion. I will be truly vigilant on this point.”

During the 2008 campaign, Biden also received a letter from the then-bishop of the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee, after he received Communion at a parish in the diocese. The letter reiterated the Catholic Church’s views on abortion, and the bishop offered prayers that Biden would “live by the virtue of fortitude as you proclaim your support to the Person of Christ in the most vulnerable of his members: the pre-born child.”

In October 2019, Biden was refused Communion at a Catholic church in South Carolina. The priest denied Biden Communion in accord with a 2004 diocesan policy that prohibits politicians who have been supportive of legal protection for abortion from receiving the Eucharist.

“Catholic public officials who consistently support abortion on demand are cooperating with evil in a public manner. By supporting pro-abortion legislation they participate in manifest grave sin, a condition which excludes them from admission to Holy Communion as long as they persist in the pro-abortion stance,” says a 2004 decree signed jointly by the bishops of Atlanta, Charleston, and Charlotte.

At the time Biden was denied Communion, his website stated that one of his priorities as president would be to “work to codify Roe v. Wade” into federal law, and that “his Justice Department will do everything in its power to stop the rash of state laws that so blatantly violate the constitutional right to an abortion,” including laws requiring waiting periods, ultrasounds, and parental notification of a minor’s abortion.

“Vice President Biden supports repealing the Hyde Amendment because healthcare is a right that should not be dependent on one’s zip code or income,” said his website.

Biden’s website also pledges him to “restore federal funding for Planned Parenthood,” and promises to “rescind the Mexico City Policy (also referred to as the global gag rule) that President Trump reinstated and expanded.”

  1. Recently, a recent Born-Again protestant friend of mine said to me when I tried to talk to him about Catholicism is that what he objected to most about people who call themselves Catholic is that they are so adamant about going to heaven despite their less than Christ-like everyday actions and speech; Catholics like Biden who profess to be, “Our brother’s keeper” while actively acting to execute their offspring only reinforces my friend’s opinion of Catholics. The best I can do is pray to the Holy Spirit for guidance in these trying times – I for one cannot live with the idea of being forced to pay taxes for abortions, that’s akin to willingly help sacrifice children to Baal Moloch.

    • I agree with YOU, however, Evangelicals seem to think they are the only sinless humans on earth. They will also find out when they get to Purgatory (which they don’t believe in) how right Catholics are. Biden, Pelosi, Cuomo, etc. are NOT Catholics. They are liars and using the Catholic name to promote themselves. God help us! +JMJ+

    • Where in Catholic dogma does it say that we are to be ‘adamant about going to heaven’? It’s always been the ‘sola fides’ Protestants I’ve met who have told me point-blank that they are going to heaven (having ‘accepted Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior’) and Catholics are hell-bound for not being Christian.
Where did your friend get hold of the idea that Catholics hold to a doctrine of ‘once saved, always saved’ or a guarantee of heaven? Bishop Barron, maybe?

      • Neil, I am 100% with you brother. I was born and raised a Southern Baptist and converted to Catholicism because I found it was impossible for me to attend a “Temple of Living Saints”. What I needed and found in the Catholic Church was a “Hospital for Sinners” and am thankful and grateful to be in the company of fellow contrite, repentant sinners; But as one of our beloved local priests who had a heart attack and joined the Lord at age 42 once said in a homily, you have to be sorry for the sins you commit and try earnestly to not fall into the trap again to be truly forgiven and if you think you are fooling the Lord by saying a sin is not a sin because you say so then there is no forgiveness at all from the Lord. My good friend that I referenced and I have been buddies since we were kids. He has always been a great guy but as more pressures of adulthood began to rain on him he became an angry man without God or religion.. Last year through his loving wife and children he heard the Lord’s voice to follow him. I have not seen him in person for over 10 years now as we are separated by more than 1,200 miles but we do have the opportunity to talk to each other on occasions and I thank the Lord every day that he helped him find the Way. And yes, even though I would like to tell him more about the wonderful Catholic path, I am even more than happy that he is following the path of Jesus Christ – even as a Free Methodist. I posted this comment because I wonder like he does if the Holy Spirit can hear my prayers when I ask: How can self-professed Christians like Biden and Pelosi, who use their mouths to say that they are Catholic while with their blood-stained hands have signed and continue to sign bills to make abortion more accessible, – be allowed to prosper? I lament the fact that in today’s world calling oneself a Christian does not mean being a true follower of Jesus Christ but just is just another an empty marketing tool.

      • Jesus Christ: “What you do to the least of these, you do to Me!” or, “let he that is without sin cast the first stone”.

The Little Sisters are the epitome of devotion to our Lord and the church. However my concern is, and has always been, the continuing conflict and emphasis on birth control. My position, and that of many other Catholics, whether Natural Family Planning or the use of nonlethal methods of contraceptives are similar in nature? The intent and purpose of the married couple with mindful thought for family size with environment overpopulation destruction, currently happening, in mind is the same. Limit the chances of getting pregnant. Having spoken to several priests on the subject I believe that to ignore the health of the only finite planet that God gave us is a mortal sin well beyond current dogma. My deceased first wife had kidney failure after giving birth to two wonderful sons. Our doctor said “no more children”. I was 35 and I was kicked out of the confessional when I asked for options.

        • MorganB, if you’d quit worshiping the planet earth and stop believing the idiocies of the “there are too many people! the planet is doomed!” movement, you’d be a lot better off.

“Kicked out of the confessional” my foot. Judging by the stuff you post here, I doubt that you were “asking for options;” you were probably trying to justify ignoring the Church’s teaching and claiming that you knew better.

“My position, and that of many other Catholics, whether Natural Family Planning or the use of nonlethal methods of contraceptives are similar in nature?”

No, they’re not, and if you haven’t figured that out you might try reading, say, Humanae Vitae. “If therefore there are well-grounded reasons for spacing births, arising from the physical or psychological condition of husband or wife, or from external circumstances, the Church teaches that married people may then take advantage of the natural cycles immanent in the reproductive system and engage in marital intercourse only during those times that are infertile, thus controlling birth in a way which does not in the least offend the moral principles which We have just explained. (20)

“Neither the Church nor her doctrine is inconsistent when she considers it lawful for married people to take advantage of the infertile period but condemns as always unlawful the use of means which directly prevent conception, even when the reasons given for the later practice may appear to be upright and serious. In reality, these two cases are completely different. In the former the married couple rightly use a faculty provided them by nature. In the later they obstruct the natural development of the generative process. It cannot be denied that in each case the married couple, for acceptable reasons, are both perfectly clear in their intention to avoid children and wish to make sure that none will result. But it is equally true that it is exclusively in the former case that husband and wife are ready to abstain from intercourse during the fertile period as often as for reasonable motives the birth of another child is not desirable. And when the infertile period recurs, they use their married intimacy to express their mutual love and safeguard their fidelity toward one another. In doing this they certainly give proof of a true and authentic love.” http://www.vatican.va/content/paul-vi/en/encyclicals/documents/hf_p-vi_enc_25071968_humanae-vitae.html Or anything put out by the Couple to Couple League.

          • Leslie, you overwhelm with your tenacity in response my blog and your command of Catholic dogma. My “weak” understanding of church tenets may be overcome by realism. By trying to expose ills of the planet I may be considered a “tree hugger”, but that label and diatribe pales with visible evidence of the sapping the natural resources leading to earth’s decline. A single and most important example of that decline is the diminishing availability of life sustaining potable water. 97% of the earth’s water is found in the oceans (too salty for drinking, growing crops, and most industrial uses except cooling). Only 3% of the earth’s fresh and drinkable water is diminishing primarily caused by human activity. Please tell me where the “sin” resides.

  2. Reading the title of the article then reflecting on its meaning revealed a squirming ball of waxy worms which may be Mr. Biden’s brain. I didn’t read further. With apologies to the author/s but with gratitude for their ability to succinctly state and prove a point in so few words.

  3. We read: “Biden said the idea that people have an obligation to look out for one another had been imprinted on him during his Catholic upbringing and ‘being educated by the nuns.’”

Educated by the nuns, he says, but now genuflecting to the “Nones” –as in all “people” are equal, but some are more equal than others; and as with the disappearing Commandments above the barn door (Orwell’s Animal Farm), and surely as with the spinning weather vane, too.

    • And before we allow Biden to implicate all nuns in his sounding like a simpleton, we must not overlook the biblical parallel to Biden’s–in effect–scapegoating. Where Adam deflected his guilt by blaming Eve (Genesis 3:12), Biden deflects his personal responsibility to the nuns of his youth.

The historical-uncritical method according to in-class Sleepy Joe Biden!

  4. For the editor. The caption beneath a convivial Biden and Pope Francis reads the a year in the future: U.S. Vice President Joe Biden meets Pope Francis after both leaders spoke at a conference on adult stem cell research at the Vatican April 29, 2106. God forbid. The photo is sufficiently frightening.

    • What is the moral objection to adult stem-cell research? I thought it was using the stem cells of aborted babies that we were to find morally objectionable, while therapies using one’s own stem cells is morally acceptable (as morally acceptable as a skin graft from one’s leg to one’s arm). Please enlighten me on this point.

      • No objection whatsoever to using adult stem cells [stem cells taken from aborted babies is certainly immoral] for research or one’s own for therapeutic reasons Nel. My fantasied fear was the possibility of stem cell research enabling Biden [he could conceivably after intervals be repeatedly reelected] and particularly his convivial friend to live on into the 22nd century. Wouldn’t you consider that entirely awful? Insufferable? My guess is if it came about many of us would refuse that option for prolongation of life on this planet. Now keep in mind it was intended for humor, a respite during trying times. Another horrible scenario would be the stem cell creation of a brain for the former VP. Think how dangerous that would be.

  5. As an afterthought the date April 29 2106 and mention of adult stem cell research conjured the nightmare possibility of both remaining in office until that date.

  7. Who really believes anything Biden says. His past lies are well documented. Right now he is pro abortion dem., which is the position of 99.9 per cent dems. The real problem is that so few Bishops say anything to criticize pro abortion catholic politicians. The irony is that the Church Christ founded has so few Bishops with fortitude. It is mostly the few gutsy priests, like Priests for Life, and their supporters who are in the vanguard trying to fight against abortion. The rest of the Church is essentially AWOL. That means if Biden is elected, the Little Sisters of the Poor with be in the cross hairs, and the Bishops will do their usual Nothing, except their usual high brow statements that mean Nothing,

    • Abortion is a cancer on our society. It is the largest civil rights issue since slavery. Mother Teresa reminded us of the danger of legalized abortion:

“Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use violence to get what they want. That is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion.”

“We must not be surprised when we hear of murders, of killings, of wars, of hatred. If a mother can kill her own child, what is left but for us to kill each other.”

Father Frank Pavone is one of the few clergy to speak out boldly against the Democrat Party, suggesting that Bishops allow clergy to speak out very specifically about their pro-abortion and anti-family agenda.

    • I feel that God put Satan here and it is up to us to use our freedom of choice to refuse to follow him, Satan, in choosing abortion. The same must apply to the other sins Catholicism forbids. As it stands, no Catholic would have a chance to campaign for president unless he allowed these “sins” to continue. Obama in his campaign stated he would do as much as possible to offer alternatives to abortion, including birth assistance and adoption and many other possible ways to help women to solve their issue other than abortion. You know how Republicans responded to anything Obama tried to put into place. Republicans have had many years and opportunities to reverse Roe vs Wade and nothing happens nor will it. Yet we are to vote for a monster like Trump whose morals, including child rape, character and criminal past and atrocities are to be overlooked. His treatment of immigrants is appalling and will go down in history as horrific as Hitler’s. Read Cohen’s book when it comes out, and you can be sure it’s truth, for what has he got to lose, and has all the documentation. Trump, the president whose lies are documented and are now the norm.

      • Much of what was put forth as “proof” was found to be completely fabricated…according to even Politifact….do you have proof? What is it? Let’s have it. Claiming Trump is like Hitler is very strange….unless you don’t know anything about Hitler. Democrats have been claiming for years that more access to birth control will make for fewer abortions. Well, perhaps, in select data..but the overall trend has been that cultures that widely use birth control increase their abortion numbers because they have set up the ideological belief that children should be few and/or unwanted. Since widespread use of contraception began and widespread legalization of abortion occurred, abortions worldwide have climbed to an est. 56 million globally/ year, making abortion the leading cause of death in the world, currently.

  8. Thank you for educating me Sister, now let me educate you on the fact that when I am elected President I am going to sue you, Sister!

    • Surely you are referring to Trump. Proven and documented liar of huge proportions and the laughing stock of the world for his pathetic lack of intelligence and even the ability to read well. His lack of knowledge of history and geography has come out during all his trips, but surely you have read that and heard it discussed constantly, unless you watch Fox News. Which of course you realize it is classified as “propaganda or entertainment with little authentic news.

  9. Between Biden and Pelosi bragging about being Catholic…well, it’s enough to make you sick. I wonder why they feel it’s so important to keep saying the lie? Who do they think they’re fooling?

    • I always have the feeling that they don’t think they are fooling Catholics (unless they truly think Catholics are fools) so much as signalling to their cohorts, ‘I can deliver you the Catholic vote and the Catholic Bishops while being exactly like you on every point of policy.’ I have the queasy feeling that the deep plot to destroy the Catholic Church from within requires ‘Catholics’ like Biden and Pelosi along with modernist, faithless bishops and pervert priests. It seems a two-pronged attack: destroy the faith of bishops and priests on one side, and water down and destroy the laity through a public perception of what a ‘faithful Catholic is’ using high-profile and diabolical politicians who are rewarded with a great deal of worldly power with which to attack the Church through laws and public policies.

  10. The beautiful Little Sisters of the Poor should sue Biden for using them as pawns in his farce of a campaign and as the liar he is about being Catholic.

  11. This should be a HUGE wake up call to all who call themselves Catholic. If the actions of Biden, Pelosi, AOC and many others who pull out their Catholic card when it is convenient for their political advancement and church leaders and followers say and do nothing, then God is correct in calling you fools. Imagine if Biden would pass away tomorrow…..he would get all the pomp and pageantry the Catholic church could muster.
But before God, He would plainly tell him “I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers”. Chilling words. Pray that God will change all the Catholics with a heart of stone into a heart of flesh and become Christians and follow Christ only.
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me”. John 14:6

For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. 1 Timothy 2:5

  12. I question the sanity of any American who labels himself/herself as a Democrat or a supported of this anti-Americans politicians who are the new socialist elite of America. There is no excuse for an American to justify a vote for these liberal socialist politician. The whole political and social mess we eyewitness today in our country is mostly because of the intellectual inadequacy of most of Americans, predominantly the younger generation who have ni histu=ory knowledge at all. Thus election could trigger already the demise of this unique nation.

  13. Joe Biden’s family home in Scranton, Pennsylvania was 2446 N. Washington Ave and the Little Sisters of the Poor’s Holy Family Residence was 2500 Adams Avenue, the next street up! Obviously he didn’t learn anything from them.

  14. I think we also need to pray for Biden.Lets us not let him be lost for6. His focus is not on Christ but on winning an election regardless.I am still recovering from witnessing practicing Catholics in Ireland who wore Pro-Choice T- Shirts at Mass and did not hesitate to receive the Holy Communion. When I asked them, like Biden, it was about Women’s rights to choose. God was not the focus of their Catholicism. I agree, that there is a misguided perception or belief among some pro choice Catholics, that it is not a sin as long as it is someone else and not them having an abortion. Apparently they do not want to offend their sister/neighbours/ aunt etc who may decide to have an abortion. As a Prolifer, I believe in prayer. Please do attend Adoration and pray for our misguided brothers and sisters. God wants us, all to be saved. We have good examples of St Paul, St Augustine and St Mary Magdalene to name just a few. Our father emphasises also prayer, forgiveness and redeeming grace.

  15. Reading the letters of commentary, one gets the impression that the Catholic World and its readers are solidly in implicit support of Trump. He is bound to use Biden’s commitment to Roe and Wade as a wedge issue to win as many Americans Catholics to his side. Apparently, there is not much the US Catholic Church can do to prevent it being weaponized for the November sweepstake by the POTUS, who hardly is a model of Christian commitment and integrity to many across the Prod and Cath divide.

    • President Trump, regardless of his previous life sins, has shown himself to be consistently prolife. His is also a friend of Isreal (the home of God’s first chosen people) and trying to develop peace accord that will work. The other party is consistently pro abortion to the point of trying to shut down, lie about and attempt to destrpy anyone, any organization and any religious organization that actively supports pro life. The Kavanaugh nomination hearings is a perfect example of the Dem approach to anyone that is pro life. The Dem. party today is not the Dems of the 1960s, to be blind to this obvious fact and their insistent pro abortion agenda is just being incredulous.

  16. We see Satan’s “Shock Troops” on TV every night.Harris/Biden/Obama/Clinton are itching to send new orders after 11-3-20. If they win. The darkness that has enveloped our East & West Coasts is close to complete. With Gods Grace & Mercy we are the worlds and Americas last best hope.

  17. Carol G. Regarding your comment that Pope Francis said not to be fixated on abortion. Wow excuse me, just did not know that some 53,000,000 plus a few million more abortions since Roe vs Wade decision is something not to be fixated on. Just another example of my lax understanding of Catholic doctrine about life.

  18. The sickening thing is that Joe Biden likely did get his inspiration from certain types of “nuns”….the nuns on the bus type, the discordant LCWR type, the new age SJW type, the type who run the schools that undermine our children’s trust and love of the Catholic teachings by advocating for women’s ordination, the acceptability of contraception, the equality of same-sex marriage, the sinfulness of using plastic grocery bags…etc. it’s utterly nauseating. Count me among those who moan and groan over their undue influence.

  19. While I believe that Christians and their Churches should be helping the poor, the immigrant, the stranger, etc. as we are taught by Jesus, I don’t believe our money we pay to the government should be used for abortions. If it’s a private choice, then abortion should be paid privately. Abortion can cause deep depression. Roe in Roe vs Wade, did not want an abortion and she had her baby. Birth control pills keeps the embryo from attaching to the uterine wall. This too is a form of abortion. Biden should allow people to follow their conscience, and not enforce us or anyone to provide abortions and/or birth control. God cares for the unborn and knows them in the womb. I’m Catholic (after going to a conservative seminary) and I’m a licensed counselor. I was going to vote for Biden, as a Republican, but not sure if he is adamant about us paying for others’ abortions and birth control. It’s really sad that he is willing to sue a Catholic community who are trying to follow their educated conscience.

    • I believe, as you said, that abortion can cause deep depression.

The mother who desires and takes steps to cause the death of her developing offspring, she kills not only the developing infant, she kills the intellectual knowledge of herself as a person of worth and goodness. She ends the life of her own soul as well as the possibility of the life of her child’s soul. In addition, she ends the physical/material life of another person.

Depression is the least of her worries.

  20. Morgan,
I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your wife and the health issues she experienced.
I think there’s much misunderstanding about NFP and the way it works. It’s just as helpful for achieving conceptions as spacing them. One of my children taught NFP and had a number of couples seeking help with infertility.
And current demographic projections are very different from those imagined back in the 1970’s. We face a population implosion now for most of the globe. Not overpopulation.

Having children is a sign of having hope in the future.
    God bless you today.
    🙂

  21. I wouldn’t guess Biden likes nuns. After all, they keep their hair covered, and sleepy Joe likes to sniff hair, so where’s the joy of hanging with nuns for him???
